
Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing promise in helping experts identify toddlers who may be autistic with a screening system that boasts an accuracy of about 80% for children under the age of two. This approach, which is based on machine learning, could allow for earlier intervention. Dr. Kristiina Tammimies, a study co-author, noted that using this AI model could leverage available information to identify individuals with an elevated likelihood for autism, leading to earlier diagnosis and help. However, she stressed that the algorithm is only a screening tool and cannot diagnose autism; diagnosis must still be done using "gold standard clinical methods.
